Puentech

A booking portal should not charge you to answer your own phone.

I am Emilio Puente, an engineer. I build websites that small businesses own, in the languages their customers actually speak, with bookings that arrive straight to the owner.

Who is building this

I am a technology consultant and an engineer. For nearly eight years I worked at NBCUniversal, most of that as Principal Engineer for Telemundo in Mexico City, writing automation and running identity systems for live television. Today I lead engineering at Impact Advisors as Head of Engineering / VP of Engineering, and I advise Zerobolas as Technology Advisor.

Puentech is what I do for small and medium businesses across the United States, Mexico and Japan, and Japan is where I am working now. The problem Zerobolas works on is the same one at a larger scale, which is getting a seller in front of a buyer without an intermediary taking a cut.

The full track record, including the Emmy and what it is actually for, is further down this page.

Why I started this

The big chains have everything. The shop on the corner pays for the scraps.

In a reality where all the big guys have everything, how can small and medium business owners get attention and drive more sales without paying the expensive and abusive fees from the bigger companies that do not understand their business, which is very niche and local?

Emilio Puente

That question is easy to assert and harder to prove, so I went and measured it. I surveyed fifty small businesses in Kobe, Japan, and built sites for fifteen of them. These numbers come from that survey.

  • 4

Shops listed with a phone number that bills them per call

The number on their listing belongs to a booking portal, not to the shop. The portal forwards the call and charges the owner for it. A customer who has already decided to visit still costs the shop money to answer.

  • 12

Of fifteen had no website of their own

Their entire presence online was a listing on a platform they do not control, cannot edit freely, and do not own. If the platform changes its terms, the business has no fallback.

  • 38

Prices on one bar's menu that Google cannot read

The whole drink menu renders only in JavaScript, so search engines see an empty page asking them to enable it. The bar had opened six weeks earlier and was already invisible for every dish and price it sells.

  • 7

Of nine Instagram handles on record were wrong or dead

One pointed at an unrelated account posting spam. Owners are often listed under a handle that no longer exists, and nobody tells them. Two businesses in the wider survey had a website whose domain has since expired, and a portal still sends customers to the dead address.

What I build

One site per business, written around how that business actually works. No monthly platform fee, no commission on bookings, no template with the owner's name dropped into it.

A site the owner owns

On their own domain, with their real prices, hours and address. If they stop working with me, the site is still theirs and still works.

The languages their customers speak

The Kobe sites ship in Japanese, English and Spanish. One has Traditional Chinese because the shop already served Chinese-speaking customers, and one has Korean for the same reason. A rebuild should never cost an owner reach they already had.

Bookings that go straight to the owner

The reservation form composes a message and opens LINE, or dials the shop directly. It reaches the owner's phone with the guest's name, party size and number. No portal sits in between taking a cut.

A booking screen the owner can actually use

Today's reservations, grouped by date, with party sizes and a phone number that dials on tap. Written in plain Japanese for the Kobe shops, with buttons big enough to use on a tablet behind the counter.

Work so far

Over a decade I have shipped more than 200 websites and platforms across the United States, Mexico and Japan. Most of that work is under NDA or has long since been retired. Here is what you can open right now.

Fifteen sites for Kobe businesses

Where my work sits right now. Restaurants, bars, cafés and salons around Sannomiya and Kitanozaka, each in three languages or more, each with a booking flow into the owner's LINE, each with its own design rather than a shared template.

Revolution Mexico

Cinema equipment rental in Mexico City, consolidating three brands into one catalogue. I worked for them as a contractor in 2018 and 2019 on their asset platform and camera pipeline, and later built their current website.

revolution-mexico.pages.dev

NBCUniversal, Telemundo

Internal web applications and automation for live media operations, in TypeScript, Angular and Python. The transcoding and ingestion work saved roughly 200,000 US dollars. Identity and access ran on Entra ID with conditional access and role based control.

Track record

Eight years inside a broadcaster, now building for the shop on the corner.

I spent nearly eight years at NBCUniversal writing automation and running identity systems for live television, where a failure is public within seconds. I advise a marketplace company in the United States and lead engineering at a consultancy. A restaurant taking its own bookings is the same work at a smaller scale.

Engineering

Websites and platforms, automation, and cloud and identity work. This is what Puentech sells to small businesses and what I did at scale for live television.

Production

I work in production as well as engineering, including field production for news and shows. The Emmy above credits me as Field Producer.

Telecom and networks

Mobile networks including 4G, LTE and 5G, network infrastructure, and satellite. On the broadcast side my documented work covers IP transport, including SMPTE 2110 with multicast and PTP, SRT, NDI, and Dante and AES67 at Dante Level 2.

Current

Impact Advisors

Head of Engineering / VP of Engineering

Current

Zerobolas

Technology Advisor

A livestream shopping and social marketplace in the United States, on iOS and Android, where sellers sell live on video across collectibles, trading cards, vehicles and real estate.

NBCUniversal / Telemundo

Mexico City, December 2018 to July 2026. Three roles over nearly eight years.

  • Mar 2022 to Jul 2026 Principal Engineer

Internal web apps and automation dashboards in TypeScript, Angular and Python for live media operations. Automated transcoding and ingestion workflows that produced roughly 200,000 US dollars in operational savings. Entra ID and Azure AD integrations, user provisioning automation, RBAC, Conditional Access, DLP and secure API endpoints, as Microsoft 365 Global Admin.

  • Aug 2019 to Mar 2022 Lead IT Analyst

SharePoint architecture, KPI tooling and Azure AD SaaS integration across LATAM infrastructure, with Intune and CrowdStrike endpoint compliance.

  • Dec 2018 to Aug 2019 Engineering Intern

News and Documentary Emmy, NATAS

Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in Spanish, for "Huracán Otis, Furia Repentina" on Noticias Telemundo. Credited as Field Producer, awarded October 2024. The award is for that news coverage. It has no connection to the engineering work listed above, and I keep the two apart because they get conflated.

2018 to 2019, and a client again today

Revolution Mexico 435DC

Programmer and Engineer, contractor

An asset inventory platform in PHP and SQL, a Phantom Flex 4K ingest pipeline, and cinema robotics work. Years later the same company came back for their web presence, and I built the site they run today at revolution-mexico.pages.dev. A client who hired me as an engineer in 2018 hiring me again for the web is the clearest evidence I can offer.

January to December 2024

Rich Music LTD

Freelance technology consultant

Rich Music recommended me and brought me in for 2024, alongside the NBCUniversal role. In March that year the label released The Academy: Segunda Misión, the reunion album by the group known as the Avengers, which went Platinum in the RIAA's Latin category. My scope covered IT, cloud and identity, media and studio technology, data and analytics, and web and app development.

Education BEng Computer Science, Centro Universitario San Angel

Diplomado in data science and machine learning applied to financial markets, ITAM.

Languages Spanish native, English C1, Japanese basic

The Japanese pages I write are reviewed for natural phrasing rather than translated by ear.
